Lush parks, fascinating history, lunch at an Italian restaurant and free time for museum visits, shopping and afternoon coffee.
Times for 2024 will be announced in March. Start at 11.00 at Kaplanen. The two guides Elisabet and Eva will take you on an exciting, informative and enjoyable walk in the central parts of Enköping. The story of Enköping's famous parks and the city's long, exciting history are intertwined. The walk goes through the older parts where the city emerged in the early Middle Ages, Eva tells how people lived here from the Middle Ages onwards. During the archaeological excavations carried out in the 2010s, completely new facts emerged that mean that the city's history had to be partly rewritten. Eva talks about how the city developed due to trade, monastic activities, horseradish cultivation and how Enköping was put on the map because of a wrench.
Elisabet tells the story of how an innovative urban gardener came to town, started and pushed through the transformation that today has become Enköping's major tourist attraction. She talks about how perennials, shrubs, trees and bulbs are combined to create different spaces and environments. About how perennials are used in large areas all over the city, in parks, roundabouts, in refuges, along streets and in squares. The walk goes through one of the smaller pocket parks embedded in the urban environment and to one of the larger parks. The tour ends in Drömparken, created by Piet Oudolf, known for his spectacular compositions of tall and colorful perennials. His most famous works besides the Dream Park in Enköping are, The Millennium Park in Chicago, The Battery Park and The High Line Park in New York.
13.15 In the middle of Enköping there is a charming little Italian restaurant called Enoteca Rådhusbacken. This is where you eat your lunch. Restahe restaurant is housed in an old wooden building located in Enköping's older neighborhood. It is home to Daniel who serves a delicious Italian-style lunch where you can choose between authentic Neapolitan pizza (heavenly) or a fresh salad of the finest ingredients... You can, in fine weather, sit outside in the pleasant courtyard environment or if you prefer to sit inside the old house. For an additional fee, you can order a glass of Italian wine or beer to accompany your meal.
After lunch, you have the whole afternoon to spend as you wish. You can choose to stroll around the beautiful green surroundings, visit the Enköping museum or head back into town for a little shopping.
Around the main square and in the surrounding streets there are many small personal shops. There is plenty of time to visit some of them. By all means, don't miss Fröken Röd, Karin Sömmare, Pepparrotsstadens Trädgård & Hantverk and Fabian Flink's Brödbod.
If you choose to discover more of the parks, we recommend a trip out on the Åpromenade along the Enköpingsån river. There you will experience as many parks and gardens as possible! Along the walk there are 18 idea gardens. These include the Theme Gardens of the Master Gardener course, with a new theme every year. One year more spectacular than the other. This is not to be missed! The creativity of young gardening students is in abundance here! There is also a lot of public art along the Åpromenade.
At the Enköping Museum, you can experience and learn a lot about the long and exciting history of Enköping. Everything from the Stone and Bronze Age to the arrival of industrialization in the city. Among other things, there is a miniature of the monastery that existed in the Middle Ages, which Eva will tell you about during the tour. So there is a lot to connect the guided tour with a visit to the museum.
In the afternoon, you decide when you want your afternoon coffee. Coffee and pastries are taken at Walter kaffebar, which is located on the lower part of Kungsgatan, where there is a pedestrian street during the summer and where several of the exciting shops are located.
