In the area around Örsundsbro, the churches are close - it is not many kilometers between. In Biskopskulla, just as the name meaning ”Bishop hill” suggests, the Archbishop was a significant landowner when it went. Biskopskulla church is a disguised medieval church - at the first glance of the small towered sanctuary, it looks like from the 18th century - but if you step into the church you will be met by medieval lime paintings.
In Biskopskulla Erik Jansson was born - the preacher who founded a fanatical sect and went to America. He named the new American hometown after his birthplace and in Bishop Hill, Illinois, the bonds to Sweden are still strong, even though the sect met a gloomy end. In the bakery cottage next to the church is a small museum that tells the story. It is open by appointment.
